John Friedmann Passes

Dr. John Friedmann has died at the age of 91. He was a honorary professor at School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), and our affiliated professor at Centre for Chinese Research, after years of work in the field of planning. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Leonie Sandercock, SCARP Professor and his daughter Manuela Friedmann, of Los Angeles. In the past year John was given many honours in tribute to his huge contribution to the planning profession.

In the past decades, Dr. Friedmann had made tremendous contribution to the planning profession, and delivered his voice of wisdom on Chinese community and regional planning. On October 6, 2016 he gave a lecture entitled “The Ruse of Reason: Poverty, Inequality, and Personal Freedoms in the People’s Republic of China 1950-2015” in acknowledgment of his 90th birthday.

The BC and UBC flags (at the North Plaza of the Old SUB) were lowered on Wednesday, June 14, in his memory.
