Belt and Road Initiative: Progress, Challenges, and Prospects

Since the proposal of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) by President Xi Jinping in 2013, BRI has attracted great attentions from all over the world. Hopes and doubts are both arising from the development of BRI. In this seminar Dr. Chen will first summarize the progress of BRI, particularly in trade and FDI, and analyze the rationales behind it. Then he will also discuss the challenges of it, such as political risk and debts problems, particularly under the context of severer China-US rivalry. As a conclusion, Dr. Chen will make his opinions on the prospect of the BRI.


About the Speaker: Professor Bo CHEN received his Ph.D. degree in Economics from Simon Fraser University (Vancouver, Canada) in 2008. Dr. Chen is the Chutian Professor of Economics in Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Director of Optical Valley Institute on Free Trade Zone (FTZ). He is also a research associate of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

Since June 2013, Dr. Chen has participated in the consultation for the Shanghai, Guangdong, and Hubei Pilot Free Trade Zones (FTZs). He was invited to give talks to senior officers at the Ministry of Treasury and the Ministry of Commerce of China. Furthermore, he is a senior lecturer to the executives of Stateowned Enterprises (SOEs) by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of the State Council on issues such as the GHM Great Bay Area Development, Belt & Road Initiative and SOE Reforms. Recently he has been frequently consulted by Chinese government for the ongoing trade war between China and the United States. His advice has been selected to report to the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau. He is also invited as an adviser to Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.

His opinions appear in various mainstream media such as CCTV, Xinhua Media, Lianhe Zaobao, BBC, The Economist, and the Wall Street Journal. Besides the central/federal governments of China, U.S.A. and Australia, Dr. Chen has also given keynote speeches on China Macroeconomic Policies and Reforms to many leading business groups and think tanks such as the Goldman Sachs Group, HSBC, the Deutsche Bank, BAML, Citi Bank, BMW, the Asian Society, the Rhodium Group, and CEPII.
